After the Flood, Kiron Bhuyan Hopes to Rebuild His Livelihood
Chutia Basti, Nazira, Sivasagar
Before the July 2026 floods, Kiron Bhuyan earned ₹7,000–₹8,000 a month as a welder. His income supported his wife, Elina, and their four-year-old daughter. Poultry and a goat also helped sustain the family.
When the floodwater rushed into their settlement, Kiron first carried his daughter to safety. He then returned to rescue Elina, who was unwell.
Their bamboo house was partially damaged, and many belongings were lost. Their poultry and goat were washed away. Kiron also lost his welding machine and work equipment. He was left without the tools he needed to earn a living.
Today, the family lives in a neighbour’s bamboo house. Kiron takes up daily wage work whenever it is available, but his income is uncertain. With both him and Elina facing health concerns, rebuilding their lives has become even harder.
Relief support from SEEDS and other organisations has helped meet some of their immediate needs. However, the family still needs a safer home, essential household items, sanitation support and help restoring Kiron’s livelihood.
For Kiron, recovery means being able to work again, care for his family and give his daughter a more secure future. With the right support, he can take the next steps towards rebuilding their lives.
Together, let’s help Kiron rebuild his home and livelihood.
