Archana’s Family Is Still Finding Its Way Back After the Floods
Santak Bor Miching Gaon, Nazira Block, Sibsagar District, Assam
For Archana Mili Morang and her husband, Abhinam, providing for their family meant working together every day. Abhinam relied on daily wage labour, while Archana cared for their children and elderly in-laws and looked after the family’s livestock. Their bamboo chang ghar was where the family came together, while their livestock offered an additional resource to depend on.
The floods partially damaged their home and left mud inside. The granary, toilet and washroom were also damaged. The family lost or sustained damage to household essentials, including bedding, furniture, cooking utensils, food stocks and school materials. Their goats and poultry were lost as well.
As daily wage opportunities became harder to find, the family had fewer resources to meet its needs. For Archana, one concern stood out: ensuring her children could continue their education.
The family continues to live in its damaged home, with repairs and sanitation improvements still needed. Access to safe drinking water remains a concern, and replacing the lost livestock would help restore an additional livelihood resource.
Assistance from SEEDS and other organisations has helped address some immediate needs, but the family’s limited and uncertain income makes rebuilding difficult.
For Archana, rebuilding means more than repairing a house. It means creating a safer place for her children to grow and learn. Let’s help her family take the next steps towards recovery.
