Binumai’s House Still Stands, But the Flood Has Left Much to Rebuild
Santak Bor Miching Gaon, Nazira Development Block, Sibsagar District, Assam
Before the flood, Binumai Morang, 37, and her husband, Anil, 40, depended on daily wage labour and livestock rearing to support their three-member family. While Anil worked as a daily wage labourer, Binumai managed the household and cared for their livestock.
The flood left their bamboo house filled with mud and damaged its walls. The damage extended beyond their shelter. Beds, furniture, clothes, bedding, cooking utensils, food stocks, electrical appliances and school materials were among the essentials lost or damaged. The family also lost a cow and a pig, which had provided an additional source of support beyond daily wage earnings.
Months after the flood, Binumai and her family are still living with its aftermath. Anil has resumed daily wage work, but the family can only partially meet its everyday expenses.
The family has received food, household items, hygiene kits and utensil kits from SEEDS and other organisations. For Binumai, rebuilding means having a safe home where her family can live without worrying about the damaged walls. It also means restoring access to safe water and sanitation, replacing essential household belongings and rebuilding the livestock assets they lost.
Let’s help Binumai’s family rebuild a safer home and regain stability.
