Dipti Pegu Kardong Hopes to Rebuild Her Livelihood After the Floods
Khabanu, Lakhimpur
For Dipti, life in Khabalu was closely tied to the land. She cultivated paddy and vegetables, worked as a daily wage labourer and raised pigs, goats, ducks and chickens. Her two bighas of paddy land and livestock helped support her family.
Every year, floods return to Dipti’s village, submerging fields and disrupting livelihoods. Farming becomes uncertain, daily wage opportunities are harder to find and damaged roads make reaching markets more difficult. For families with limited resources, recovering from one flood can be challenging before the next arrives.
Dipti’s family continues to face financial difficulties. Access to safe drinking water and toilet facilities is also a concern during and after floods.
Yet Dipti is looking ahead. She hopes to raise livestock again and grow vegetables to help restore her family’s livelihood. Home repairs and support with livestock and seeds could help her take those first steps towards recovery.
Because rebuilding is not just about recovering what was lost. It is about being able to grow, earn and prepare for the future.
Together, let’s help Dipti rebuild her home and livelihood.
