For Dhaneswari Mili, Recovery Begins with a Place to Cook.

A kitchen is more than a place to cook. It is where daily routines begin and families come together. For 60-year-old Dhaneswari Mili, rebuilding means restoring a safe, functional space to prepare meals for her family.

Before the July 2026 floods, Dhaneswari’s family of four depended on daily wage labour and livestock rearing, earning approximately ₹6,000–₹7,000 a month. Dhaneswari and her son shared family responsibilities, while their poultry, goats and cow provided additional livelihood support.

The floods damaged the family’s bamboo chang ghar, swept away their livestock and destroyed or damaged essential belongings, including beds, furniture, utensils, clothes and food stocks. Mud left behind by the flood further affected their living conditions.

The damage to their home also left Dhaneswari struggling to find a suitable space to cook.

The family has returned home, but everyday life remains difficult. Dhaneswari continues to earn through daily wage work, yet the loss of livestock has weakened their livelihood. Although relief assistance from SEEDS and other organisations has helped meet immediate needs, repairs and essential facilities remain out of reach.

Dhaneswari hopes to repair her home, restore a functional kitchen and replace the livestock her family lost. Access to safe drinking water and sanitation, along with essential household support, would help make their living conditions safer.
