The Bamboo Posts Are Weak. Jyoti’s Family Needs a Safer Home.
Santak Bali Gaon, Nazira, Sibsagar, Assam
A home can survive the floodwaters and still be left vulnerable. For Jyoti Morang Panging and her family, the weakened bamboo posts of their chang ghar are a reminder that recovery is far from over.
Before the Assam floods of 2026, Jyoti Morang Panging and her family of five relied on daily wage labour and livestock rearing to meet their needs. While Padma worked as a daily wage labourer, Jyoti managed the household and cared for their livestock.
When the floods struck, the family lost a cow and a pig, along with essential household belongings and stored food. Their bamboo chang ghar also suffered damage. The bamboo posts have weakened and now need urgent replacement. The toilet and washroom were damaged too.
Today, the family continues to live in the chang ghar, but its weakened supports raise concerns about the safety of the structure. With livestock lost and household income still uncertain, rebuilding has been difficult. Access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation also remains a challenge.
For Jyoti, recovery means strengthening the home, replacing the livestock and restoring essential facilities. She hopes to create a safer and more stable living environment for her child and elderly family members.
Together, let’s help Jyoti and her family rebuild.
