Lalit Mili’s Home Stands, But Recovery Remains After the Floods
Santak Bali Gaon, Nazira, Sibsagar, Assam
A home can remain standing and still leave a family struggling to feel secure again.
Before the Assam floods of 2026, Lalit Mili relied on daily wage labour to support his family, while his wife, Runumoni, managed the household and cared for their livestock. Together, they worked to meet everyday needs and support their child’s education.
The floods damaged their bamboo kitchen and sanitation facilities, washed away essential household belongings and swept away their goats, poultry and a cow. Although their main bamboo home remained intact, the loss of these essentials and productive assets has made recovery difficult.
Today, Lalit’s limited earnings make it hard to repair the damaged facilities or replace what the family has lost. They also lack access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation. While assistance from SEEDS and other organisations has helped meet some immediate needs, rebuilding their livelihood remains a challenge.
As Lalit shares, “With my small income, not able to repair the kitchen.”
For Lalit’s family, recovery means restoring essential household facilities, replacing lost assets and rebuilding a more dependable source of livelihood. Your support can help Lalit’s family recover what they have lost and move towards a safer, more secure future.
