A Damaged Home. A Lost Business. Still Nilima’s Family Ready to Rebuild
Santak Bor Miching Gaon, Nazira Block, Sibsagar District, Assam
When the floods washed away the materials of Nilima Gam’s tent house business, they took away more than equipment. They disrupted the livelihood his family depended on.
Before the Assam floods of 2026, Nilima Mili Gam and her family relied on their small tent house business and livestock rearing to meet everyday needs. While Jivan managed the business, Nilima cared for their household and livestock. Together, they worked to support their family and their children’s education.
Then the floods changed everything. The materials that kept their business running were washed away. Their bamboo home was partially damaged and filled with mud, while goats, poultry and essential household belongings were also lost.
Today, the family is still trying to find its footing. Their damaged home needs repairs, the toilet and washroom remain affected, and access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation is still a concern. Although relief support from SEEDS and other organisations has helped meet some immediate needs, rebuilding remains difficult without the resources to restore their livelihood.
For Nilima’s family, recovery means more than repairing their home. It means helping Jivan restart the tent house business, restoring their lost assets and creating a more reliable source of income.
Together, let’s help Nilima rebuild a safer home and livelihood.
