Prijalata Kardong Hopes for a Better Tomorrow After the Floods
Khabalu, Assam
Prijalata Kardong, 41, supported her family through farming, vegetable cultivation and daily wage work. She also raised and sold livestock to supplement the household income. With her husband working away from home, she lives with her young son and manages their daily needs.
The floods damaged four bighas of Prijalata’s paddy fields and her cattle shed. She also lost five chickens and six ducks. Although the floodwater has receded, her home still needs repairs. Living near the Ranganodi River, she faces recurring floods that damage her crops and weaken her house pillars. This time, a lack of money has left her unable to carry out the necessary repairs.
With little access to daily wage work, Prijalata is struggling to make ends meet. Access to safe drinking water is another challenge for her family and the wider community, particularly during and after the floods.
Over the next three to six months, Prijalata hopes to repair her home, access safe drinking water and start a small kitchen garden to supplement her family’s income.
Every year, the floods leave Prijalata rebuilding. This time, let’s help Prijalata rebuild her home and restore the livelihood her family depends on.
