Priyanka Payeng Hopes to Start Duck Farming After the Assam Floods
Kothalpukhari, Assam
Before the floods, Priyanka Payeng, 27, relied on farming, vegetable gardening and livestock to support her family. Her paddy fields and animals were important sources of food and income.
The floods damaged two bighas of paddy fields, destroyed gardens and damaged her home. Her family also lost a pig and three chickens. Each year, flooding disrupts life in her village, cutting off road connectivity and preventing children from attending school. Food shortages and limited access to safe drinking water add to the difficulties families face.
Today, even after the floodwater has receded, Priyanka’s family is still working towards recovery. Damaged roads continue to affect connectivity, while the loss of crops and livestock has weakened their livelihood. Repairing the house and meeting everyday needs remain difficult with limited resources.
Priyanka hopes to start duck farming over the next three to six months and rebuild her family’s livelihood. The waters have receded, but rebuilding continues. With support, Priyanka can take steps towards a safer home and a more secure livelihood.
Let’s stand with Priyanka as she works towards a fresh start.
