Purnima Kaman Payeng Hopes to Grow Again After the Assam Floods
Khabalu, Assam
Before the floods, Purnima Kaman Payeng’s life in Khabalu, Assam, revolved around cultivation and caring for the resources her family depended on. Her small kitchen garden, poultry and ducks helped meet every day needs. Though life was simple, she had ways to support her family through her own work.
Then the floods damaged her home and disrupted her livelihood. Water damaged the walls, floor, doors and windows, along with clothes, bedding, cooking utensils and food. Her cattle shed was affected, four bighas of paddy fields were damaged, and five chickens and six ducks were lost.
Although her home is no longer surrounded by floodwater, her paddy fields remain flooded. Purnima and her family now depend on daily wage labour, but when work is scarce, even putting enough food on the table becomes difficult.
Still, Purnima is looking ahead. She hopes to bring home two or three pigs, restart poultry farming and return to cultivation. With paddy seeds and support to rebuild her home and replace essential belongings, she wants to restore the livelihood that once helped her family manage.
Help Purnima take the first steps towards rebuilding her home and growing her livelihood again.
