Runumoni Payeng Looks Ahead to New Beginnings After the Floods
Gisek, Assam
For Runumoni Payeng, 28, life in Gisek, Assam, has always revolved around her family and farming. A homemaker and farmer, she grew vegetables and depended on cultivation to support her household. Her crops and livestock were important sources of livelihood, helping her family meet its everyday needs.
But floods return year after year, washing away crops, damaging homes and threatening the livelihoods families like Runumoni’s depend on. This time, four bighas of her paddy fields were damaged. She also lost a pig and three chickens, further reducing the resources her family relied on.
The impact extends beyond the fields and home. During floods, roads become difficult to access and communication with the village is disrupted. Poor road conditions continue to create challenges, while children’s education is affected when travel becomes difficult.
Runumoni’s family now faces the challenge of rebuilding with limited resources. She hopes to receive financial support to restore her livelihood and replace the livestock she has lost. Over the next three to six months, she wants to start duck farming, creating another source of income for her family.
For Runumoni, recovery means being able to farm again, raise livestock and provide her household with greater security.
Your support can help Runumoni restore her livelihood, restart livestock rearing and move towards a more secure and self-reliant future.
