Sangita and Her Family Hopes to Rebuild After the Flood
Santak Sawra Basti, Nazira Block, Sibsagar District, Assam
When floodwaters entered Sangita Munda’s home, she faced a difficult choice: protect her children or risk losing the livestock her family depended on. For Sangita, the floods changed the everyday life her family had worked hard to maintain.
Sangita lived with her husband, Romesh Munda, their two sons and her aged father-in-law in Santak Sawra Basti. Romesh worked as a daily wage labourer, earning approximately ₹7,000–₹8,000 a month. Their poultry, goats, cow and pig provided additional livelihood support.
As floodwaters entered their premises, Sangita took her children to safety when a rescue boat arrived. Their livestock was washed away, and their bamboo house sustained damage to its walls and kitchen. Essential household belongings were also lost or damaged.
The family continues to live in its damaged bamboo house, with the kitchen and walls needing repairs. Although relief assistance from SEEDS and other organisations has helped meet immediate needs, access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation remains a concern. The loss of livestock has also weakened the family’s livelihood.
Sangita’s family hopes to repair their home, replace their lost livestock and restore essential household items. Better access to safe water and sanitation would also help create safer living conditions.
Together, let’s help Sangita Munda and her family rebuild.
