The Flood Left More Than an Empty Cattle Shed For Kabita
Santak Bali Gaon, Nazira, Sibsagar, Assam
“I lost three cows in the floods. My source of income is gone”, says Kabita Morang.
Before the Assam floods of 2026, Kabita Morang and her husband, Biren, worked together to support their family of three. Biren ran a small shop, while Kabita managed the household and cared for their livestock. Their small business and animals provided important sources of income and support for their family.
When the floods struck, the family had to take shelter in a Namghar. Although their bamboo chang ghar remained intact, they lost three cows and several essential household belongings. Their toilet and washroom were also damaged, leaving the family without adequate sanitation facilities.
Today, Biren has taken up daily wage work, but the family's income remains uncertain. With their livestock gone, an important source of household support has disappeared. The family also continues to face challenges accessing safe drinking water and adequate sanitation.
For Kabita and Biren, recovery means restoring their livelihood, replacing the livestock they lost and ensuring safer living conditions for their child. They hope to strengthen their small business and rebuild the stability they once had.
Together let’s help Kabita and her family restore livelihood and access safer water and sanitation.
