The Floodwaters Have Receded, but Sompa Still Has Much to Rebuild

Head: Sompa Kardong

The floodwater has receded in Khabalu, Assam, but for Sompa Kardong, 31, the road to recovery is far from over. A farmer who grows vegetables and raises livestock, she depended on her crops, animals and stored grain to support her family.

The floods damaged three bighas of paddy fields and destroyed her granary, along with around 50 kg of stored rice. Two cows, three goats and 20 chickens also died, leaving her family with fewer resources to rely on.

Today, Sompa faces life without a regular income. Her damaged granary needs repair, her farming activities have been disrupted and the livestock she once raised can no longer support her household. The receding water has marked the end of one immediate danger, but rebuilding daily life remains a challenge.

Sompa wants to repair her granary and return to farming with agricultural tools and vegetable seeds. She also hopes to start a small goat farm and access clean drinking water through a hand pump.

Together, let’s help Sompa restore her livelihood, rebuild her food security and prepare for a more stable future.
