The Waters Receded, but Mahila Munda’s Struggle to Rebuild Remains
Santak BorMishing Gaon
Mahila Munda and Brishi Munda built their everyday lives around work, home and the care of their livestock. Mahila earned ₹7,000–₹8,000 a month through daily wage labour, while Brishi managed the household and looked after their poultry and cows. Their bamboo house provided shelter, and the animals offered additional support when household expenses arose.
When the floodwaters rose in July 2026, Mahila and Brishi had to leave their home by country boat. After the water receded, they returned to find their living rooms, kitchen and toilet damaged. Utensils had floated into nearby areas, household belongings were scattered and two cows were missing.
Today, Mahila and Brishi are staying in a makeshift bamboo shelter. They have received food, household items, a hygiene kit and a utensil kit from SEEDS and other organisations, but much remains to be restored.
Mahila continues to earn through daily wage work, although the family’s income meets only part of its expenses.
A repaired home would give Mahila and Brishi a safer place to live. Restoring the kitchen and toilet, replacing essential household belongings and improving access to safe water and sanitation would help make daily life more manageable. Replacing lost livestock could also help rebuild the household’s additional source of support.
The floodwaters have receded but the struggle to rebuild continues. Let’s help Mahila and Brishi turn damaged house into safe homes and uncertain days into hopeful tomorrows.
