When Floods Take Away the Comfort of Home: Sabitri’s Story
Santak Bor Miching Gaon, Nazira Block, Sibsagar District, Assam
The floods left mud on Sabitri Mili Paw’s floors, a leaking roof overhead and uncertainty about what comes next.
Before the Assam floods of 2026, Sabitri’s family relied on daily wage labour and livestock rearing to meet their everyday needs. Raj Paw, 32, worked as a daily wage labourer, while Sabitri managed the household and cared for their two children and livestock.
Then the floods disrupted their lives. Their bamboo house was partially damaged and filled with mud. The roof now leaks when it rains, and their toilet and washroom need repairs. Essential belongings were lost or damaged, while their stored rice and paddy were submerged. The loss of goats and poultry further weakened the family’s livelihood.
Today, the family continues to live in its damaged home. Although relief support from SEEDS and other organisations has helped provide food. However, other essentials and hygiene supplies remain.
For Sabitri, rebuilding means more than repairing a house. It means having a safe roof overhead, access to clean drinking water and proper sanitation, and an opportunity to restore the family’s livelihood.
