Abdul Rahaman’s Home and Livelihood Were Swept Away by the Assam Floods
Santak Hutkhula, Nazira Development Block, Sivasagar District, Assam
When the floodwaters rise in Santak, everyday life becomes difficult for Abdul Rahaman and his family. This time, the water left their home damaged and took away the belongings and assets they depended on.
Abdul Rahaman lives with his wife, Amina, and four other family members in Santak Hutkhula, Nazira Development Block, Sivasagar district. The six-member household includes four adults and two children, as well as two elderly family members. Before the flood, Rahaman ran a small shop in Bihubar Bazar, which provided an estimated monthly income of ₹8,000–₹10,000. The family also depended on livestock as a supplementary household asset and source of livelihood.
Abdul received basic food supplies such as rice and other basic essentials, which helped his family through the immediate aftermath. But much more remains to be rebuilt.
Abdul Rahaman shares,
“We did receive basic food supplies like rice, which was helpful, but that's about it. Otherwise, everything in my home has been destroyed. We don't even have a sofa to sit on or a bed to sleep on. The house is broken.”
He adds,
“I had a small shop that supported my livelihood, but all our belongings and assets are gone. As you can see, nothing is left. Everything is lost, including our poultry, cows, goats. It is a complete loss.”
Recovery Is More Than Immediate Relief
Basic food support can help a family through the immediate aftermath of a flood. But recovery continues long after the first supplies arrive.
For Abdul, it means repairing his damaged home, replacing essential household belongings and finding a way to rebuild the livelihood that once supported his family. His livestock and shop were part of how he managed everyday life, and their loss has made the path to recovery harder.
With the right support, Abdul can begin rebuilding a safe place to live and restoring the essentials that can help his family move forward.
Indicative Recovery Requirement
Based on an initial indicative assessment, Rahaman's recovery requirement could be around ₹1,90,000. Around ₹1,20,000 is indicated for rebuilding a permanent house, durable rebuild. A further ₹20,000 is indicated for replacing the domestic animals lost, based on a typical small mixed holding for the area, to be confirmed through field verification. ₹20,000 is set aside for household utensils and essential items, and ₹30,000 for continued sanitation and drinking water support during the recovery period.
Recovery requirements and costs are indicative and subject to field and technical verification. Support will be prioritised according to assessed household needs.
