Assam Floods 2026

When the Waters Recede, the Crisis Remains

The 2026 floods in Assam have left families facing a crisis that extends far beyond the visible destruction caused by the water. In Sivasagar and Charaideo, SEEDS’ rapid assessment across 93 households in six villages found that 100% of surveyed homes were damaged—30% fully destroyed and 70% partially damaged. Safe water access has been severely disrupted, with households dependent on relief or bottled water. Sanitation risks are also rising, with 41% reporting open defecation. The health burden is equally concerning: 100% reported skin disease, 86% fever or respiratory illness, 82% injuries and 78% stress or trauma.

But behind these numbers are families trying to rebuild ordinary lives after losing the security they depended on. Across the communities visited by SEEDS, families are telling us that their most urgent needs are shelter and livelihoods—a safe roof over their heads and the means to earn again. For a family whose home has been damaged, recovery cannot begin without a secure place to live. For a household whose crops, livestock, tools or daily work have been disrupted, relief cannot end with a ration or a kit; they need an opportunity to restore their income and stand on their own feet again. SEEDS is therefore working to move beyond short-term relief towards safe shelter, household recovery and livelihood restoration, helping families repair or rebuild their homes, replace essential household assets and regain the means to support themselves. Your support can help transform recovery from temporary survival into a return to dignity, stability and self-reliance—so families are not simply protected from the next rain, but are better prepared to face the next flood.
