Before the floods, Anoda Morang, 49, managed her household on her own through occasional daily wage work and the poultry and other livestock she raised. Living alone in Santak Bor Miching Gaon, she earned approximately ₹5,000–6,000 through her livelihood activities and was able to meet her daily expenses. Her animals provided an additional source of income and helped her maintain a degree of financial independence.

The floods partially damaged Anoda’s bamboo chang ghar, a raised-style house, and washed away her poultry, pig and goat. She also lost essential household belongings, including her bed, furniture, cooking utensils, clothes, bedding, food stocks, electrical appliances and other necessities.

The loss of her livestock was particularly significant. These animals had been an important part of how she supported herself, and losing them left her with fewer resources to fall back on.

Anoda continues to live in her partially damaged chang ghar, which needs repairs. Although she has access to food, safe drinking water, markets and transportation, she lacks adequate sanitation and must manage daily life with fewer household resources.

With her livestock gone, Anoda has become more dependent on daily wage work. However, her health limits how much physical work she can undertake, making it difficult to earn enough to compensate for her losses.

“Flood took away everything especially livestock. Before flood I was managing my expenses. Now, I have to work regularly. My health does not permit,” Anoda says.

Relief assistance from SEEDS and other organisations, including food, household items, hygiene kits and utensil kits, has helped her meet some immediate needs. However, her damaged home, lack of adequate sanitation and loss of livelihood assets continue to make recovery difficult.

Anoda is trying to regain her independence despite the challenges she faces. Over the next three to six months, she hopes to repair her home, replace the livestock she lost and rebuild a more reliable source of income.
