Gulu Ali Holds His Family Together, Even with No House Left Standing
Santak Bor Miching Village, Nazira Block, Sivasagar District, Assam
When the floodwaters entered Gulu Ali’s home, everyday life was turned upside down. Family belongings were soaked and ruined, the walls gave way and the old tin roof began to crack and leak under the heavy rain.
Gulu recalls how difficult it was to protect what they could. Books, papers, clothes, bedding, blankets and other household belongings were left soaked and damaged. A fridge, fans, a washing machine and other essential items were also lost or damaged. Three cows and two ducks belonging to his brother’s wife were among the animals affected.
Gulu Ali shares: “Almost everything is gone, including books, papers, clothes, bedding, blankets. Everything got soaked and ruined. The walls broke down, and the old tin sheets on the roof cracked and leaked everywhere during the rain.”
For Gulu and his family, recovery means more than replacing belongings. It means restoring a home that can provide safety and stability once again, while rebuilding the everyday things they need to move forward.
