Muhi Morang is Rebuilding After Losing House and Herd
Santak Bor Miching Village, Nazira Block, Sivasagar District, Assam
On a Sunday afternoon, Sri Muhi Morang and his wife had gone to the local market for their weekly shopping. By around 4:00 PM, the floodwaters had risen so quickly that they could no longer reach their home. His elder son brought a boat to help them move to safety, and the family took shelter at their small shop.
Within minutes, the rising water had reached their home and shop. Household belongings and shop supplies were damaged, while the family’s stored paddy was submerged and began to sprout. The family also lost livestock they had kept at home, including three to four goats, three cows, three pigs, ducks and chickens.
For Muhi and his family, the flood affected both their home and the resources that supported their everyday lives. Hence, rebuilding their home, restoring essential household items and replacing lost livestock are important steps towards recovery.
Sri Muhi Morang shares: “We had three or four goats, and all of them were washed away. We had three cows — a milch cow with a calf and a plough ox. The ducks and chickens are also gone. The stored paddy that was supposed to feed us for two years all started sprouting. So many goods in the shop were destroyed, and we haven't been able to reopen the shop to this day.”
The family has begun looking towards what comes next. Rebuilding their home and shop, restoring essential belongings and replacing lost livestock can help Muhi and his family regain stability and rebuild their everyday lives.
Indicative Recovery Requirement
Based on an initial indicative assessment, Muhi's recovery requirement could be around ₹2,62,000. Around ₹1,42,000 is indicated for rebuilding a permanent house, given the scale of destruction and the need for a full, durable reconstruction. A further ₹68,000 is indicated for replacing the domestic animals lost, based on a typical small mixed holding for the area, subject to confirmation of the exact number and type. ₹27,000 is set aside for household utensils and essential items, and ₹25,000 for continued food and drinking water support during the recovery period.
Note: Recovery requirements and costs are indicative and subject to field and technical verification. Support will be prioritised according to assessed household needs.
