The Flood Took His Home and Tools. Nizamoddin Is Ready to Rebuild.
Santak Bor Miching Village, Nazira Block, Sivasagar District, Assam
For Nizamoddin Ali, carpentry has been a way to earn a living and support his family. His tools and machinery are essential to the work he knows and depends on. But the floods have disrupted both his home and his ability to continue working.
As the floodwaters receded, Nizamoddin was able to recover a few of his tools from the mud and silt. But they were too damaged to be used again.
Md. Nizamoddin Ali shares,“I used to do carpentry work. My home collapsed, and all my machinery and tools were swept away in the silt and mud. I found a few of them in the silt, but they were completely ruined and are of no use anymore. Now I have no way to continue my work.”
With his home needing to be rebuilt and his carpentry equipment lost, his recovery now means restoring the essentials that can help his family regain a sense of stability and allow him to return to his work.
Rebuilding a Safe Home and Returning to Carpentry
For Nizamoddin, rebuilding is about creating a safe place for his family while also restoring the equipment he needs for his carpentry work. His home provides security for his family, while his tools are an important resource for returning to the work he knows.
Support towards a permanent home, essential household items and carpentry machinery can help Nizamoddin rebuild what the flood damaged and take practical steps towards restarting his work.
Indicative Recovery Requirement
Based on an initial indicative assessment, Nijamoddin's recovery requirement could be around ₹2,32,000. Around ₹1,30,000 is indicated for rebuilding a permanent house, reflecting the near-total destruction of the existing structure and the need for a full, durable rebuild. A further ₹48,000 is indicated for replacing the livelihood items ( carpentry tools), based on a typical small mixed holding for the area, to be confirmed through field verification. ₹33,000 is set aside for household utensils and essential items, and ₹21,000 for continued food and drinking water support during the recovery period.
Recovery requirements and costs are indicative and subject to field and technical verification. Support will be prioritised according to assessed household needs.
