When the floodwaters entered Santak Hatkhula Village, Nazira Block, Sivasagar District, Assam, Md. Shamsuddin Ahmed’s and his family had to leave behind much of what made their house a home. Their food supplies, household belongings and his daughter’s educational materials were among the things affected by the flood.

Before the flood, Samsuddin's household earned roughly ₹7,000–₹9,000 a month, combining daily wage work with income from the animals he kept at home.

Today, Shamsuddin is already taking steps towards recovery. With help from friends who provided tin sheets, he has begun repairing the family home. For him, rebuilding is about creating a secure place for his family while gradually restoring the essentials they lost.

Shamsuddin Ahmed shares: “When these floodwaters came, all the essential household items were lost and nothing could be saved. From the gas cylinder to around 25 tins of rice, everything was ruined. My daughter studies at Rajia College, and her books, papers and clothes were also lost. I asked some friends to help with tin sheets, and that is how I am rebuilding this home now.”

Getting a permanent house built would matter most to Samsuddin right now. It would free his family from depending on someone else's home and give them a fixed place to live again. Replacing the animals and essentials lost in the flood would help restore both his livelihood and his family's daily routine.

Indicative Recovery Requirement

Based on an initial indicative assessment, Samsuddin's recovery requirement could be around ₹2,65,000. Around ₹1,45,000 is indicated for rebuilding a permanent house, reflecting the extent of damage and the need for a full, durable reconstruction. A further ₹70,000 is indicated for replacing the domestic animals lost, based on a typical small mixed holding for the area, subject to confirmation of the exact number and type. ₹28,000 is set aside for household utensils and essential items, and ₹22,000 for continued food and drinking water support during the recovery period.

Note: Recovery requirements and costs are indicative and subject to field and technical verification. Support will be prioritised according to assessed household needs.
