The Flood Washed Away More Than a Home. Help Elema Begum Rebuild Her Home and Livelihood.
Santak Bor Miching Village, Nazira Block, Sivasagar District, Assam
When the floodwaters swept through Santak Bor Miching village in Assam, Elema Begum lost almost everything her family depended on.
Her home was severely damaged and is no longer safe to live in. Her livestock, an important part of the family’s livelihood, was swept away. Utensils, household essentials and many of the everyday things that made their house a home were damaged or lost.
Before the flood, Elema's household lived on an indicative ₹5,000–₹6,300 a month, coming largely from farm work and the livestock the family kept at home, based on typical income levels for similar households in the area and yet to be confirmed through field verification.
Today, Elema Begum and her family are staying in a neighbour’s house.
They have ration and drinking water to help them through the immediate aftermath of the flood. This immediate flood relief is helping the family manage today, but rebuilding will take longer.
Elema Begum says: “Because of the floodwaters, we are living under this makeshift shelter today. When the water level rises in the house, we move up to the raised platform and, when it recedes, we come back down. This is how we are managing to cook, eat and carry on with our daily lives right now. We have kept our household belongings safely stored inside the shop to protect them from the water. I want to rebuild a safe home for my family and restore what we lost.”
For Elema Begum, recovery means more than replacing what was lost. It means having a safe place where her family can live again. It means restoring the livelihood assets that help him provide for her family.
