The Flood Washed Away More Than a Home. Help Sumi Islam Rebuild Her Home and Livelihood.
Santak Bor Miching Village, Nazira Block, Sivasagar District, Assam
When the floodwaters rose through Santak Bor Miching village, Sumi Islam watched the safety of her home disappear overnight.
Three to four feet of water stood inside the house. One of the walls collapsed, while essential belongings, including her cooking gas cylinder, TV and household items, were damaged, thrown outside or washed away.
The flood also took away assets that supported her family’s everyday life. They had two goats, a kid and around 15 ducks and chickens. Today, only three chickens remain.
But recovery is not only about what was lost. It is about what comes next.
With immediate relief helping families through the first days after a disaster, Sumi now hopes to rebuild a safe home and restore the assets her family depends on.
Before the flood, Sumi's household got by on a modest income of roughly ₹5,000–₹7,000 a month, built around small-scale cultivation and the animals she kept at home.
Sumi shares her experience: “The water stayed inside our house throughout the night. Our gas cylinder, TV and other belongings were damaged or washed away. We also lost most of our livestock. We had two goats and around 15 ducks and chickens, but now only three chickens remain.”
For Sumi, rebuilding means creating a safe place for her family again and restoring the means that help them move forward.
