Before the floods, Majoni Chetri, lived with her husband, Ajit, in a bamboo house in Gohain Bari, close to the Dikhow River. Ajit worked as a daily wage labourer in a tea garden, earning around ₹6,000–₹7,000 a month. Their goat and poultry provided additional support, helping the family manage everyday expenses. Though their means were modest, they had a home and a livelihood to rely on.

When the floods struck, Majoni was seven months pregnant. As the water rose around their home, she had to make her way through the floodwaters to reach safer shelter, determined to protect herself and her unborn children.

“During the flood, I was seven months pregnant. I needed to protect two lives. I was brave enough to walk through the floodwater and took shelter in a safer place. I was blessed with twin babies, but I lost one,” Majoni recalls.

The family’s bamboo house was completely damaged. Their beds, furniture, clothes, cooking utensils, food stocks and other household essentials were lost. Their goat and poultry were washed away, leaving them without an additional source of livelihood.

Today, Majoni and Ajit live in a makeshift shelter with their young children. Although they have access to drinking water, the lack of adequate sanitation remains a concern. Ajit continues to depend on daily wage work, but the family’s income is insufficient to meet all their needs and rebuild what they have lost.

Food, household items, hygiene kits and utensils provided by SEEDS and other organisations have helped them manage the immediate aftermath. Their recovery now depends on securing a more durable home, improving sanitation and replacing essential belongings. Replacing their lost livestock could also help restore a supplementary source of income and food.
