When heavy rain caused floodwaters to surge into her village within an hour, Priyanka Morang lost her home, her livestock and the food she had stored for her family. With her house almost completely destroyed, she is now staying at a neighbour’s home as she works towards rebuilding a place of her own.

Before the floods, Priyanka’s household relied on farm work and livestock. The animals and stored rice and paddy were important resources for the family. The floodwaters swept them away, leaving Priyanka to rebuild her home while recovering from the loss of essential household belongings and food supplies.

Recalling the Assam Floods 2026, Priyanka says,

“On the 19th, after heavy rain, floodwaters suddenly gushed into our village within an hour. The water washed away our house structures and belongings. We lost our 20 ducks and chickens, and even our cow was swept away. Whatever we had kept in the courtyard and inside our home was lost. We had also stored around two to three quintals of rice and paddy, but all of it was washed away.”

Her house was left almost completely destroyed and unfit to live in. Moreover, the loss of her livestock and stored food added to the challenges of rebuilding.

Taking the Next Steps Towards Recovery

Priyanka is currently receiving ration and drinking water support to help meet her immediate needs. However, rebuilding her home and replacing essential household items and lost livestock remain important priorities.

A safe and durable home would give her family a secure place to live and a foundation from which to move forward. Restoring essential household resources can also help the family regain greater stability after the floods.

Priyanka’s Indicative Recovery Needs

Based on an initial indicative assessment, Priyanka's recovery requirement could be around ₹2,48,000. Around ₹1,28,000 is indicated for rebuilding a permanent house, reflecting the near-total destruction of the existing structure and the need for a full, durable rebuild. A further ₹58,000 is indicated for replacing the domestic animals lost, based on a typical small mixed holding for the area, to be confirmed through field verification. ₹37,000 is set aside for household utensils and essential items, and ₹25,000 for continued food and drinking water support during the recovery period.

Note: Recovery requirements and costs are indicative and subject to field and technical verification. Support will be prioritised according to assessed household needs.
