Head: Purabi Payeng

For Purabi Payeng, the damage to her home began when the flood brought down its bamboo wall. As the wall gave way, the water entered the house and swept away the everyday things her family depended on. From utensils and furniture to their gas cylinder, everything was gone away in the Assam flood.

The house itself was also severely damaged. What remains is a reminder of how quickly a family’s everyday life can be disrupted when floodwaters enter their home. For Purabi, recovery begins with restoring a safe and secure place for her family to live and replacing the essentials lost in the flood.

Purabi Payeng shares, “After the flood came, our bamboo wall fell down. As the wall washed away, all our household items inside were swept away one by one. Our furniture was damaged, and even our gas cylinder and utensils were carried away. Everything, including our bed and other belongings, got washed away. This is our home right here, but the house was also completely damaged.”

Rebuilding a Safe Home

The loss of household essentials has affected Purabi’s family beyond the damage to the structure itself. Furniture, cooking items and other belongings are part of the everyday necessities that make a house functional.

Rebuilding a safe home and restoring these essential items can help Purabi and her family create a secure space again. It is to rebuild a home where they can begin putting their daily lives back together after the flood.

Indicative Recovery Requirement

Based on an initial indicative assessment, Purabi's recovery requirement could be around ₹2,48,000. Around ₹1,28,000 is indicated for rebuilding a permanent house, reflecting the near-total destruction of the existing structure and the need for a full, durable rebuild. A further ₹58,000 is indicated for replacing the domestic animals lost, based on a typical small mixed holding for the area, to be confirmed through field verification. ₹37,000 is set aside for household utensils and essential items, and ₹25,000 for continued food and drinking water support during the recovery period.

Recovery requirements and costs are indicative and subject to field and technical verification. Support will be prioritised according to assessed household needs.
