For Mamoni Kardong, 39, farming is at the heart of family life. Living in Khabalu, Assam, she and her family depend on growing paddy and selling their produce to make a living. Their harvest provides food and income, while the livestock they raise offers additional support. But with floods returning year after year, protecting what they grow and raise has become an ongoing challenge.

The recent floods have once again disrupted Mamoni’s life. Her five-bigha paddy field was damaged, threatening the family’s harvest and income. Their paddy granary, where they stored their produce, was completely destroyed, and around 500 kg of paddy was lost. The family also lost five ducks, five goats and fifteen chickens.

Although the floodwater has receded, the impact remains. Mamoni and her family continue to live in their small house, but without a regular income, meeting daily needs has become difficult. With their stored paddy and livestock gone and their fields damaged, they have fewer resources to depend on as they work to rebuild their lives.

For Mamoni, recovery begins with restoring the essentials of her farming livelihood. Repairing the paddy granary would help her store future harvests safely, while agricultural tools would support her return to cultivation. Replacing lost livestock and obtaining vegetable seeds could also help the family rebuild additional sources of food and income.

Despite the setbacks, Mamoni is looking ahead. Over the next three to six months, she hopes to repair the granary and start a kitchen garden. These are practical steps towards rebuilding her livelihood and helping her family regain some stability. With the right support, she can begin restoring the resources on which her household depends.

But the threat of recurring floods remains. As Mamoni explains, floods repeatedly damage crops, homes and household belongings, while washing away livestock that families rely on for income. Each time, families must find ways to rebuild, often with limited resources and little time to recover before the next flood.

Mamoni’s recovery is about repairing damaged structures or replacing lost animals. It is about helping her return to farming, rebuild her livelihood and regain the stability her family needs to move forward.
