Head: Rekhamoni Pegu

Rekhamoni Pegu, 38, lives with her husband, Anil, in Saura Basti, Nazira Development Block, Sivasagar district. Before the flood, the family depended on small-scale vending, livestock and vegetable cultivation for their livelihood.

Anil primarily contributed to the family's income through vending and livestock-related activities, while Rekhamoni managed the household and cared for their animals and vegetable garden. The family lived in their own home and depended on pigs, poultry and vegetable cultivation for food and supplementary income.

The floods severely damaged their home and destroyed many of the belongings they had built up over the years. Beds, furniture, cooking utensils, clothes and other essential household items were damaged or lost. Their livestock and vegetable garden were also affected, reducing the assets that supported the family's livelihood.

Rekhamoni Pegu says,

“We suffered a lot of losses during the floods. Bed, Godrej cupboard, showcase and many other things were damaged. Pigs, goats... we don't even have clothes to wear now. We are just wearing what we received from relief.

The condition of the house is completely broken. Everything collapsed. After the house collapsed, the chairs, tables, Godrej cupboard, showcase, bed... all our belongings were lost.”

The loss of livestock and the damage to their vegetable garden affected an important part of the family's livelihood. At the same time, the flood disrupted Anil's vending activities, making it harder for the family to restore their income.

Anil's recent medical recovery has added to these challenges. His health condition has affected his ability to move around freely and resume regular livelihood activities.

The family has received relief assistance from SEEDS and other organisations, including food, household items and hygiene support. This assistance has helped them manage some immediate needs, but the family continues to require support to make their home safer, replace essential belongings and rebuild their livelihood assets.

A Safer Home and Livelihood to Rebuild

For Rekhamoni and her husband, recovery is about more than replacing damaged belongings. It means restoring a safe place to live and rebuilding the assets that helped their family earn and manage their everyday needs.

Strengthening and repairing the damaged home can give the family greater safety and stability. Replacing lost livestock and supporting agricultural activities can help restore supplementary sources of food and income.

Support for essential household items and sanitation can further help the family rebuild their everyday lives with greater dignity and security.

Indicative Recovery Requirement

Based on an initial indicative assessment, Rekhamoni's recovery requirement could be around ₹90,000. Around ₹40,000 is indicated for replacing the domestic animals lost, based on a typical small mixed holding for the area, to be confirmed through field verification. ₹20,000 is set aside for household utensils and essential items, and ₹30,000 for continued sanitation and drinking water support during the recovery period.

Note: Recovery requirements and costs are indicative and subject to field and technical verification. Support will be prioritised according to assessed household needs.
