Ruma Chaowra Needs More Than Relief to Rebuild Her Home

Head: Ruma Chaowra

Before the floods, Ruma Chaowra and her family managed their daily needs through casual labour and the domestic animals she reared at home. Their household earned around ₹5,000–7,000 a month, with ducks, chickens and goats providing an additional source of support. Life was modest, but these earnings and resources helped the family manage its everyday needs.

The floods left Ruma’s house almost completely destroyed and unsafe to live in. The ducks, chickens and goats kept in the shed were lost, while household belongings, including utensils and other everyday essentials, were damaged or swept away.

With no habitable home to return to, Ruma has been staying at someone else’s house. The loss of her livestock has also affected an important source of household support. It became hard for the family to regain financial stability.

SEEDS and other organisations have provided food, household items, hygiene kits and utensil kits, helping the family address some immediate needs. However, shelter repairs, sanitation facilities, essential household belongings and livelihood assets remain important gaps in their recovery.

Ruma shares:

“I felt happy receiving these relief items. As you know, my younger sister's health condition has been unwell/sick. There is no one else at home; it's just my younger sister, my sister-in-law, and me living here.”

Ruma and her family are trying to manage with the resources available to them while looking towards a more stable future. Rebuilding a safe home is a key priority, as it would give them a place of their own and greater security. Replacing the lost domestic animals could also help restore a source of livelihood and household support.
