Sarifa Rahman lives with her family of five in Santak Hutkhula, Nazira Development Block, Sivasagar district. Before the flood, the family primarily depended on daily wage work, with livestock providing an additional source of household income and assets.

Sarifa looked after the household and family responsibilities, while daily wage work provided the family's main livelihood. The family lived in a bamboo house and maintained a small piece of land. Their bamboo house was partially damaged, along with beds, furniture, cooking utensils, clothes, bedding, food stocks, electrical appliances, school materials and other essential household belongings. The family also lost all its livestock.

The loss of livestock removed an important source of household assets and supplementary livelihood. At the same time, the flood disrupted daily wage opportunities in the surrounding area. The family has resumed some income-generating activities, but their earnings remain irregular as they work to restore their livelihood.

Sarifa Rahaman says,

“When the floods came, the situation inside our house became terrible. The entire house collapsed and everything was damaged. The house was severely damaged.

We received some rice and lentils as relief. But we do not even have a toilet now. Silt completely covered and buried it, and the government toilet we had was damaged. Even now, there are huge pits and holes inside our house. We have placed bricks and wooden planks over the holes so that we can sleep and stay there. The situation is very difficult.

If any help or assistance can be provided, I request all of you to support us.”

The family has received assistance from SEEDS and other organisations, including food, household items, shelter materials and hygiene kits. This support has helped the family address some immediate needs. The family now requires continued support to strengthen its shelter, restore livelihoods and livestock, and improve access to safe water and sanitation.

A Safer Home and Livelihood to Rebuild

For Sarifa, recovery is about more than immediate relief. It means making the family's home safer, restoring access to basic sanitation and replacing the productive assets that supported their livelihood.

Strengthening the damaged bamboo house can give the family a safer place to live, while replacing lost livestock can help restore an additional source of household income alongside daily wage work. Support for safe water, sanitation and essential household items can further help the family rebuild everyday life with greater security.

Indicative Recovery Support

Based on an initial indicative assessment, Sarifa's family may require around ₹1,40,000 in recovery support. Around ₹70,000 is indicated for strengthening and rebuilding the bamboo house. A further ₹20,000 is indicated for replacing lost livestock, based on an initial estimate for a small mixed holding in the area. ₹20,000 is indicated for household utensils and essential items, while ₹30,000 is indicated for continued sanitation and safe drinking water support during the recovery period.

Note: Recovery requirements and costs are indicative and subject to field and technical verification. Support will be prioritised according to assessed household needs.
