For 44-year-old Sumitra Polong, the flood did more than damage her home. It disrupted the everyday life and livelihoods that helped her family manage from one day to the next. In Santok Bar Mising village, floodwaters damaged the doors and parts of her home, leaving it difficult for the family to stay there safely. Her livestock was lost. The family’s small shop, another source of support, was also swept away, taking with it the money and savings they had kept inside.

With the shop gone, livestock lost and work becoming harder to find, Sumitra is now trying to rebuild with fewer resources than before. Yet her story is not only about what the flood took away. It is about the steps needed to restore the foundations of everyday life. That includes a safe home, productive assets and a livelihood that can help her family regain stability.

In Sumitra’s Own Words,

Due to the flood, my house and doors broke down like this. Now it is very difficult to stay here. All our chickens, cows and goats are also gone. It has become difficult to find work, to manage and to get by. We are facing a lot of difficulties, and our small shop was also swept away. Whatever money and savings were inside the shop are all gone."

A Home and Livelihood to Rebuild

For Sumitra, recovery is about more than immediate relief. It means restoring the resources that can help her family regain stability and move forward with greater security.

Indicative Recovery Requirement

Based on an initial indicative assessment, Sumitra's recovery requirement could be around ₹1,40,000. Around ₹70,000 is indicated for rebuilding a permanent house, durable rebuild. A further ₹20,000 is indicated for replacing the domestic animals lost, based on a typical small mixed holding for the area, to be confirmed through field verification. ₹20,000 is set aside for household utensils and essential items, and ₹30,000 for continued sanitation and drinking water support during the recovery period

Note: Recovery requirements and costs are indicative and subject to field and technical verification. Support will be prioritised according to assessed household needs.
