Support Bobita Munda in Rebuilding What the Flood Took Away
Saura Basti, Nazira Development Block, Sivasagar District, Assam
When the floodwaters damaged their bamboo house near the Dikhow River, Bobita Munda, 42, and her family lost many of the things that supported their everyday life. Their beds, furniture, cooking utensils, clothes, food stocks, school materials and other household essentials were damaged or washed away. Their 10 poultry were also lost, while the flood covered their vegetable garden with sand.
Before the flood, Bobita and her husband, Tinku Munda, 46, supported their family of five through daily wage work and vegetable cultivation. Their small plot of land and poultry were important household assets, helping them manage their daily needs.
Today, the family is taking steps towards recovery. With support from organisations working in the area, they have a temporary structure to live in while they work towards rebuilding a safer and more permanent home. Tinku continues to look for daily wage work, while Bobita hopes to restart vegetable cultivation when the land becomes suitable again.
Bobita Munda shares: “We are living in a kind of makeshift arrangement. We cannot call it a home. When the floods came, we couldn't save anything at all. We could only escape with ourselves and our children. Our house was completely destroyed and washed away.”
For Bobita, having a safe and durable home would be an important step towards restoring stability for her children. The family's recovery also depends on restoring the livelihoods and household assets they lost in the flood.
The family currently does not have access to safe drinking water, and their toilet was damaged during the flood. They are using an open pit toilet. Living close to the Dikhow River also means that flooding and river erosion remain ongoing concerns.
Recovery is more than getting through the flood
The family has already received food, household items, shelter materials and hygiene kits from SEEDS and other organisations. This support has helped them address some immediate needs. Now, they hope to move towards longer-term recovery by strengthening their shelter, restarting vegetable cultivation, replacing their lost poultry and improving access to safe water and sanitation.
